Who We Are
Youth Leadership Lycoming is a leadership program
for high school sophomores and juniors, which enables students to develop
leadership skills, while increasing awareness of their community.
Youth Leadership offers students the opportunity to work with adult leaders in
their community through daylong seminars held over a nine-month period. The
sessions focus on leadership skills, environmental issues,
citizenship/government, media/communications, community issues, community needs,
opportunities, challenges and resources.
I. MISSION STATEMENT
Youth Leadership Lycoming is a leadership training program designed to
understand the needs of the communities it serves, then educates and motivates
students to commit themselves to address those needs through a variety of
community leadership roles.
II. SELECTION PROCESS
All students from Lycoming County public schools and Bishop Neumann High School
who are entering either the 10th or 11th grade in the fall of the coming school
(calendar) year. Previous applicants who were not chosen may reapply, if still
eligible. Graduates of Youth Leadership Lycoming may not reapply.
III. CRITERIA OF YOUTH
LEADERSHIP LYCOMING
Student applicants should have an expressed interest in understanding and
serving the community, as well as enthusiasm and commitment to participate in
the program. Applicants should have also either demonstrated leadership ability
or have exhibited potential leadership ability. Students should have a
satisfactory academic standing within their respective school district. Each
school is limited to forwarding seven applications to the Youth Leadership
Lycoming Selection Committee.
Objectives:
- To provide opportunities for a diverse group
of students to interact with one another and with community leaders and
decision makers.
- To acquaint students with community needs,
resources and other factors that influence the future development of Lycoming
County.
- To encourage students to recognize their own
potential and develop their leadership skills.
- To foster student’s interest in volunteer
community involvement
- To inspire students to encourage the
leadership potential of their peers by becoming “Ambassadors” of their school
and community.
- To expand the student’s understanding of
service learning.
- To instill in the student a pride in their
community.
