Are you interested in seeing your communities prosper?
Are you willing to become involved to make a difference in
your community?
That's what Our Towns 2010 is about, we want to communicate, have citizen
involvement and be a catalyst for change. We can only accomplish this with your
help.
A few years ago, Our Towns 2010
became an affiliate of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. This
unique collaboration envisioned advancing both community and economic
development together in order to enhance revitalization work in our county. This
teamwork was based on the following premises:
-
Businesses
looking to locate here are interested in the cultural and
educational aspects of our communities as well as the economic.
-
Art and music
are in themselves generators of business activity, and are a good way to
create interest in downtown revitalization.
-
Good architectural
design and preservation of key historic buildings are important ties to our
history and attractive to persons interested in moving here and investing in
real estate.
-
Getting community
participation in envisioning and helping to create the future of our towns
adds creativity, energy, and enthusiasm to the effort.
The collaboration has
produced results.
Our Towns 2010 has initiated
and been involved in events since 1998 such as:
- The proposed
Conference Center and Cinema
- The New Market
Street Bridge and
- First Fridays
We are now involved in two new
and exciting projects – the Downtown Mural Project and the Main Street Program –
which we believe will help energize downtowns throughout Lycoming County.
Inspiration
Lycoming Mural
The
Mural will surround on three sides the parking lot between the Bullfrog Brewery
and Woodlands Bank on West Fourth Street. It celebrates the community and the
history of Williamsport and Lycoming County through the persons depicted. Part
of the planning of this project was researching and recording local history and
the people who have been a part of it. Upon completion, it will be the largest mural of its kind in the country.
The Main Street
Program
In 2006 we embarked on an ambitious new initiative as a State-designated “Main
Street” Program, which represents a major opportunity for Williamsport and the
five participating boroughs of Montoursville, Jersey Shore, Hughesville,
Montgomery, and Muncy. Competition for designation as a Main Street community is
itself a challenge, and selection is an honor and brings with it economic
benefits for our towns. Main Street is known for its success rate in helping
communities reach their goals for improvement.
